Phillip is a family member of the White Rock YMCA who once enjoyed outdoor activities such as sports and turkey hunting. In 2012, he suffered a massive stroke at age 59, completely paralyzing the left side of his body. After completing the prescribed physical and occupational therapies, Phillip was determined to continue increasing his mobility and independence. The men’s group at his church recommended he try working out at the White Rock YMCA with a personal trainer.

“I started working out with Jermaine, personal trainer at the White Rock YMCA, to increase mobility in my left leg and improve my balance,” Phillip said. “When I started coming to the Y, I wasn’t walking as well as I am now – Jermaine continuously challenges me to get where I want to be during my sessions.”

Phillip’s wife Linda said the Y has truly impacted Phillip and helps him have a positive attitude. “It’s an opportunity for him to work out with Jermaine to improve his strength and confidence, and I work out during those times as well,” she says. “The Y has been a blessing to us physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
