A New Kamp Experience - Kamp K'aana

The word “K’aana" is derived from the Alabama Coushatta Indian language and means “health and wellness”. It stands for kids achieving activity & nutrition awareness. Kamp K'aana introduces children, ages 10-14, to the tools they need to learn and love a healthy lifestyle, while offering the fun of an overnight summer camp experience!

This two-week camp program is held at the YMCA's Camp Grady Spruce, and caters to children who are above a healthy weight. Camp Grady Spruce is located on Possum Kingdom Lake and offers campers lake swimming, arts & crafts, archery, BBs, rock climbing, canoeing, tubing, hiking, sail boating, and so much more outdoor fun!  The two-week session will run Sunday, July 22–Saturday, August 4th.

The Camp provides professional expertise, nutritious meals, and a life-changing experience. Designed by a team of pediatric specialists and is delivered by the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas,  each day  campers receive 3 meals and 1-2 snacks designed by pediatric dieticians. The 1800 calorie daily meal plan is delicious, balance and nutritious, with an emphasis on high fiber and whole grains rather than sugar and fat. Campers are equipped with the tools they need to conquer their weight management issues while at the same time offering an experience that increases self-confidence and builds self-esteem.

Kamp K’anna also provides a positive, non-judgmental environment where kids can make lifelong friendships and feel comfortable relating to others with similar weigh struggles. Daily sessions are provided with a wellness coach with interactive lessons on appropriate portion sizes, self-esteem and smart food choices.

Campers have specially trained camp counselors who are warm, positive, and compassionate.  Campers will experience a wide range of activities like archery, water sports and camp traditions. Parents will receive tips on healthy eating and campers will be able to participate in reunions in Dallas over the following year providing ongoing support towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

By the end of the two-week session campers typically lose five to ten pounds.  Once they return home, children will be motivated to maintain their weight and achieve their long term goals.

To be eligible for Kamp K’anna children must be in the 95th percentile of Body Mass Index (BMI) or above the 95% for their gender and age.
