From Survival to Strength: Brian Browning’s Journey with the YMCA Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program

About 18 months ago, I was faced with a decision: die young or fight to be there for my daughter as she grows into adulthood.
I had spent over a decade unknowingly battling depression, buried under family stress and life’s pressures. I didn’t recognize myself anymore. Even sitting in a recliner was hard—my chest was so heavy I could barely breathe. A routine dental appointment turned into a wake-up call when the dentist refused to treat me because my blood pressure was dangerously high. Every sign pointed in the same direction: if I didn’t change, I was on my way out.
I was disgusted with who I had become, both inside and out. But slowly—very slowly—I started to move again. I worked up the courage to rejoin the YMCA and enrolled in the Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program. That program changed everything. I learned not just how to manage my numbers, but how food, mood, and mindful conversations with my doctor could truly shift my health.
More importantly, I found people who believed in me before I believed in myself. Wellness coaches and Group Ex instructors like Tamila, Keri, and Ebony were instrumental in my transformation. They pushed me to try new things. I never thought I’d do (and really didn’t want to at first!). But they helped me push through, and now I’ve not only met my goals—I’ve surpassed them.
Here’s what’s changed:
- My blood pressure is under control.
- I’ve gone from wearing 3X clothes to a size L.
- I can bend over and tie my own shoes again.
- My daughter says she actually likes me now.
- I feel like I can do anything.
- And maybe best of all—I have friends. People I talk to. People who care.
I’m not the same person as I was. Through all the pain, soreness, setbacks, and hard work, I’ve become someone I’m proud of. The YMCA gave me the tools, the support, and the community I didn’t know I needed. I’m here. I’m alive. And I’m just getting started.
