YMCA Dalles All-Star Nomination: Celebrating Maurice Compton at the Semones Family Y

At the Y, authentic leadership is measured not only by accomplishments but also by the impact a person has on others. This year, we are proud to recognize Maurice Compton as an All-Star Nominee—not only for the outstanding work he has done, but for the heart, care, and leadership he continues to share with our community.

2025 has been a year of challenges for many families, but through it all, Maurice has been a source of hope and encouragement at the Semones Y. His presence has helped our kids and families find joy, comfort, and connection when they needed it most. His story is just one of many that highlight the incredible depth of his impact.

Building Programs that Change Lives

Maurice has a unique gift for recognizing needs and creating opportunities. When he launched Teen Night, it began with just 35 kids; Today, more than 75 teens gather for fun, friendship, and support in a safe and uplifting space.

These teens have faced extraordinary hardships this year, from the loss of friends to family illnesses and even the devastating floods that shook their communities. Through every trial, Maurice made sure the Y remained a place of joy and belonging.

Beyond Teen Night, Maurice’s leadership has brought to life countless initiatives:

• Monday Bible Study, offering encouragement and community.
• Sticky Fingers Culinary Program is now at full capacity.
• A reimagined Family Fun Night, drawing over 300 people this summer.
• Support for AOA luncheons, along with the introduction of a new member calendar.

And it doesn’t stop there. Maurice is equally known for the small, heartfelt gestures: walking members to their cars in the rain, checking in on teens after surgery, sending treats, or simply reminding families that both he and the Y are there for them. It’s no wonder the kids affectionately call him “the GOAT.”

More Than Programs: A Community

Maurice hasn’t just built activities, he has built a community. He has become the heartbeat of the Semones Y, a leader who embodies compassion, service, and joy in all that he does.
