As an Impact Communications Intern with the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, one of the most rewarding parts of my role is stepping beyond the office to experience firsthand the programs creating lasting impact across our communities. Each visit provides a new perspective, but my time with the McKinney Family YMCA’s Emerging Leaders Summer Program reminded me that leadership often begins with one thing: opportunity.

The Emerging Leaders program is a seven-week summer experience designed to equip teens with the knowledge, confidence, and life skills they need to succeed beyond the classroom. Through activities such as swimming, STEM projects, community field trips, and leadership development opportunities, participants are encouraged to explore new experiences while preparing for their futures.

On Thursday, July 9, I joined the group during a field trip to First United Bank, where teens participated in a financial literacy workshop titled “Dollar and Sense.” The presentation introduced practical skills such as budgeting, saving, and making responsible financial decisions to help prepare them for college, careers, and adulthood. Students actively participated in discussions, shared their perspectives, and asked thoughtful questions about navigating financial responsibility in the real world.

Following the presentation, the group enjoyed lunch, generously provided by Jersey Mike’s, before transitioning to their next challenge: business pitches. Working in teams, students developed creative business ideas and confidently presented their concepts to the group. Through collaboration, innovation, and problem-solving, they demonstrated many of the leadership qualities the program strives to cultivate.

Watching the students encourage one another, share ideas, and step into leadership roles showed that the Emerging Leaders experience is about much more than a summer activity. It creates opportunities for young people to recognize their potential and envision themselves as future entrepreneurs, college students, community leaders, and changemakers. Every experience, conversation, and challenge becomes another building block toward their future.

Walking away from the day, I wasn’t just leaving with notes for a story; I was leaving with a deeper appreciation for why the YMCA’s work matters. The greatest investments are not always measured in dollars; they are measured in the time, encouragement, and opportunities we provide to young people today. Through programs like Emerging Leaders, the YMCA continues to create spaces where the next generation can learn, lead, and grow into the leaders our communities need tomorrow.
