Reliant Energy and the YMCA Provide Swim Lessons & Water Safety Education to Dallas Children

The Safety Around Water program officially began as of Wednesday, June 4 to help prevent drowning ahead of summer swim season.
Reliant Energy and the YMCA are teaming up once again to provide swim lessons and water safety education through the Safety Around Water program to help prevent drowning and keep kids safe around water. Each year, the program operates at more than 100 locations across North Texas, providing vital water safety education and swim lessons to thousands of families. Reliant Energy is supporting this program with a $30,000 donation to the Y!
On Wednesday, June 4 the media was invited to the Moorland Family YMCA at Oak Cliff to see this program in action and help spread awareness of water safety ahead of the summer swim season. Two groups of local children participated in swim instructions as part of their summer programming at the Y.
Importance of water safety education, by the numbers:
Drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 1-4.
According to the American Red Cross, 64% of African American, 45% of Hispanic/Latino, and 40% of Caucasian children have few to no swimming skills.
The Safety Around Water program brings life-saving services to those with limited resources. Participants receive instruction on basic swim skills, such as floating and the front crawl, as well as survival swim skills to prevent drowning.
Thank you to Reliant Energy for their support of Safety Around Water!
