On June 10th, the Waxahachie Family YMCA took a meaningful step forward in honoring a beloved community member with the groundbreaking of the Cindy Hess Memorial Park. More than just the beginning of a new outdoor space, this event marked the continuation of a legacy rooted in service, connection, and the enduring values of the YMCA.

The ceremony gathered community members, families, YMCA leaders, and local officials, all there to celebrate the impact of Cindy Hess and the lasting contributions she made to the Waxahachie Family YMCA and the city she loved.

“This project is not just about building a park,” said Michael Scott, Waxahachie City Manager. “It’s about building a community — and that’s what the YMCA is about.”

A Space for All

The new park will offer something for everyone. Whether it's families enjoying a quiet walk, kids playing after school, or athletes refining their skills on the field, the Cindy Hess Memorial Park is designed as an inclusive space that supports physical activity, connection with nature, and personal growth.

Curt Hazelbaker, President and CEO of YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, emphasized the importance of outdoor wellness:
“We want to get people moving and experience the rejuvenation of being outside.”

In true YMCA spirit, the park embodies the mission to strengthen the community through healthy living and social responsibility. It’s more than a space — it's a tribute to the people who make Waxahachie feel like home.

Honoring Cindy Hess

Cindy Hess was a guiding light at the Waxahachie Family YMCA, known for her compassion, leadership, and devotion to youth and families. The park bearing her name is a reflection of her commitment to service and community enrichment. Her legacy will live on through the laughter of children, the footsteps of walkers, and the bonds formed in a place she helped inspire.

Rooted in Waxahachie Pride

The heart of this project lies not just in the YMCA’s mission, but in the deep roots of the Waxahachie community itself.

Desmond Mason, who was born and raised in Waxahachie, expressed the pride and strong sense of identity that defines the town:
“I don’t tell people I’m from Dallas, I tell people I’m from Waxahachie.”

That sentiment reflects the bond between the city and the YMCA — two pillars working hand-in-hand to create opportunities, strengthen families, and shape futures.

Looking Ahead

As construction continues, excitement builds for what the Cindy Hess Memorial Park will become. It stands as a reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together with purpose, love, and a shared vision for the future. The Waxahachie community encourages those who are able to contribute to the project’s success. With a combined fundraising goal of $3.7 million for the community park and building expansion, every donation makes us one step closer to making the Waxahachie Family YMCA a vibrant, welcoming space for all to enjoy.

The Waxahachie Family YMCA invites everyone to follow the progress, participate in upcoming events, and, once completed, make the park a part of their lives — just as Cindy Hess made the YMCA a part of hers.
