Youth Sports Carve Healthy Minds and Bodies For Lifelong Success, How YMCA Dallas Helps Strengthens A Child’s Self-Confidence
For a child in sports, lacing up their shoes and putting on a jersey with their number on it is a reminder that they belong, and that they have a place at the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. Youth sports are where a child can have fun, learn discipline and responsibility, and most importantly, create community. As one of the largest sports providers in North Texas, the Y has registered roughly 58,000 children this past year.

Building Healthy Minds & Bodies
“For many families, youth sports is a connection point,” said Brian Haines, Vice President of Operations, leading Lake Highlands Family YMCA and Sports. “It’s incredible to see young people get excited to try something new. Whether it's on the field or on the court, being part of a team helps kids understand the importance of sportsmanship and what it means to work together. We want every child to have a chance to get into the game and discover what they’re capable of.” It’s clear that exercise improves cardiovascular health and combats obesity, but it may also enhance a child’s mental well-being. According to a study conducted by the Journal of Athletic Training, children who reported more than 60 minutes of physical activity a day, 5 to 7 days per week, had 56 percent reduced odds of depression and 47 percent reduced odds of trait anxiety compared to those who performed physical activity 2 days per week or less.
Building Confident Leaders
Being part of a sports team can also nurture and enhance a child’s self-confidence, communication, and social skills. An article shared by Parents magazine highlighted the critical need of youth sports as it relates to young girls.
In a study titled “Play to Lead: The Generational Impact of Sport on Women's Leadership," researchers surveyed nearly 3,000 women and found that more than half reported sports played a significant role in their development. Nearly 70 percent said they held at least one formal leadership role outside the family and that the skills and lessons learned while in sports translated into adulthood. The same study also concluded that young girls who played sports for at least 11 years are more inclined to become leaders.
Youth sports provide a foundation of development that young children may not otherwise have access to. The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas youth sports offers equal opportunities for families to find a sense of belonging and health, supporting future champions and stronger communities.
