Beyond the Field: Jonathan’s Journey from Scottish Rite for Children to the YMCA
At 21 years old, Jonathan is turning his passion for filmmaking into a future career. As a college student, entrepreneur and former YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas summer intern, he has already taken meaningful steps toward his goals. Along the way, he received care at Scottish Rite for Children.
After experiencing a stroke at five months old that affected the left side of his body, Jonathan began receiving care at Scottish Rite. Over the years, his care addressed his mobility and walking.
Growing Up with Scottish Rite
Jonathan was first referred to Scottish Rite after his pediatrician noticed concerns with his walking and balance. His care included visits with orthopedic and neurology specialists, gait studies and the use of an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) to support his walking.
As he grew, his care team continued to monitor his progress and adjust his treatment to meet his changing needs. When he expressed a desire to stop wearing his AFO as a teenager, his physician discussed that possibility with him.
Beyond the Field: Discovering a New Passion
Sports were an important part of Jonathan's childhood. He participated in Miracle League baseball and football and loved being part of the game.
However, because of his medical history, certain sports came with additional risks. A Scottish Rite physician eventually advised Jonathan against participating in contact sports due to concerns about potential injuries.
For Jonathan, the news was difficult. Sports were one of his biggest passions, and stepping away meant finding new ways to pursue his interests.
Over time, he discovered a love for movies, particularly superhero films. What began as an interest in watching movies grew into a curiosity about how they were made, eventually inspiring him to pursue filmmaking.
Jonathan began taking filmmaking classes and developing his skills. While attending college full time, he launched his own production company, GC Productions, turning his passion into a growing business.
His interest in storytelling eventually brought him to the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, where he served as a summer intern. During his internship, Jonathan gained hands-on experience creating video content and learned more about the collaborative process behind professional video production.
While filmmaking has become his passion, sports still hold a special place in Jonathan's life. He recently returned to Miracle League as a volunteer, helping children experience the same joy of playing sports that he experienced growing up. Through volunteering, he hopes to encourage families facing similar challenges and show parents that their children can overcome obstacles and thrive.
Helping Young People Discover What's Possible
Looking back, Jonathan is grateful for the people who encouraged him throughout his journey, especially the specialists at Scottish Rite who supported his growth and independence.
“Those connections will be worth a lifetime,” Jonathan said.
Today, as he nears completion of his bachelor's degree and continues growing his business, Jonathan hopes his journey can inspire other young people and families facing similar challenges.
His story is a reminder that every young person's path looks different. Whether discovering confidence through sports, exploring new interests or developing skills for the future, having the right support can make a lasting difference.
