Beyond the Scholarship: How the Y Helped Valencia King Turn Opportunity Into Impact

At the Y, we don't just invest in students. We invest in their potential, their purpose and the possibilities ahead. Because one opportunity can change the course of a life.

For Valencia King, that opportunity came through the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Foundation’s Carl B. and Florence E. King Scholarship. What began as financial support during her transition to college became an investment that shaped her educational journey, creative ambitions, and media career.

As a TV journalist, media strategist, and sports media professional, King has built a career around storytelling, connecting with audiences, and bringing attention to stories that deserve to be heard. But before stepping into the media industry, she was a freshman preparing to begin her college journey at the University of North Texas. Through the YMCA scholarship, King received $1,000 per semester to help support her education. That financial assistance provided more than relief from the cost of attending college; it gave her the opportunity to focus on her studies and explore the creative interests that would eventually become part of her professional career.

"It allowed me to focus more on my studies and not have to worry so much about the financial burden of attending UNT," King shared.

An Investment That Created Room for Creativity

Sometimes, the greatest impact of financial support is what it allows someone to pursue beyond the immediate need.

For King, having that additional financial support created room to explore her creativity and take initiative early in her college experience. During her freshman year, she launched a radio show with a purpose that extended beyond simply being behind a microphone. She noticed that much of the media coverage surrounding young people focused on negative headlines. However, her own experiences told a different story. She saw college students in her community pursuing their dreams, developing their talents, and working toward meaningful careers. She was able to give peers a platform to share their experiences, accomplishments, and aspirations.

"The YMCA was able to help me lean into my creative side even more," King explained. Through that experience, the scholarship's impact began to reach beyond one student. It helped create an opportunity for other young creatives to be recognized and celebrated.

More Than Financial Support: Building Connections and Community

The impact of the YMCA scholarship program also extended into the relationships King developed along the way.

She reflected on how the scholarship experience began building connections even before she officially became a recipient. During the interview process, she met other college-bound students from different high schools and backgrounds. What started as conversations between students navigating similar feelings of excitement and uncertainty became an opportunity to establish meaningful connections.

Those relationships, along with the continued support of YMCA staff and advisors, helped create a sense of community throughout her college journey. King also spoke about the program's ongoing check-ins and scholarship renewal process, which required her to submit semester transcripts and grades. Although the additional steps initially seemed like another responsibility, she came to appreciate the accountability and connection they created.

Whenever she had questions or needed guidance, she knew she could turn to the Y and her scholarship advisor for support. That continued relationship reinforced an important part of the YMCA's approach to youth development: investing in young people means more than helping them get started. It means creating an environment where they can remain supported as they grow.

Using Her Platform to Tell Stories That Matter

Today, King's career reflects the versatility and creativity that first inspired her to pursue media.

Having worked as a political news anchor for approximately three years, she understands the responsibility that comes with telling stories in spaces where multiple perspectives and competing narratives exist. She emphasized the importance of remaining grounded in facts, separating personal opinions from reporting, and ensuring that the information shared with an audience remains accurate. Her approach to sports journalism also allows her to explore storytelling from another perspective. While covering professional sports, including the WNBA, NBA, NFL, NHL, and FIFA World Cup, she looks beyond the final score and statistics.

For King, the stories surrounding athletes can be just as meaningful as their performances. She highlights the work athletes do in their communities, including charitable foundations, youth camps, and initiatives that create opportunities for others. Rather than focusing exclusively on what happens during a game, she considers what audiences might want to know about the people behind the athletes.  That curiosity reflects a broader understanding of media: storytelling has the power to inform, connect, and shine a light on impact that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The Impact Continues

Valencia King's journey reflects the very possibilities she encourages others to pursue. When asked what advice she would offer aspiring media professionals seeking financial support, she encouraged young creatives to look beyond traditional career paths and funding opportunities. Whether their dreams lead them to journalism, influencing, media, or entrepreneurship, she believes there are opportunities to bring creative ideas to life for those willing to seek them out.

What began with a scholarship to help ease the financial burden of education became an opportunity to explore her creativity, develop her voice, and continue building toward a future she once only imagined. Through the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Foundation’s Carl B. and Florence E. King Scholarship, it invested in more than her education; it helped create room for her dreams to grow.

Today, King continues to use her voice and platform to tell stories, elevate others, and inspire the next generation of creatives. And perhaps that is where the impact comes full circle: a young woman whose own dreams were supported is now reminding others not to limit theirs. Because sometimes, the greatest impact of an opportunity isn't just what it makes possible for one person, but what that person goes on to make possible for others.

One scholarship. Countless possibilities. An impact that continues.

That's the power of the Y.
