More Than a Job: How the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA helped Daniel Find His Place
If you've spent much time at the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall, you've probably met Daniel Hettinger.
Whether he's greeting members with a smile, cleaning equipment, sweeping the gym floor, or making his way through the building with purpose, Daniel has become a familiar face to generations of YMCA members. In fact, his parents say that almost anywhere they go in Rockwall, someone recognizes him.
"Everybody knows Daniel from the Y," his father, Glen, said.
Where It All Began
Daniel first came to the YMCA as a 10-year-old learning to swim alongside his younger brother. Soon after, he joined the Riptides swim team, where he found more than a sport. He found a community.
Years later, during his senior year of high school, a teacher helping students prepare for employment reached out to the YMCA to see if Daniel might have an opportunity to work there. The answer was yes.
That part-time job became something much bigger.
Since graduating in 2007, Daniel has proudly worked at the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall, helping care for the building and welcoming members every day. For nearly two decades, he has taken pride in making sure the YMCA is clean, inviting, and ready for the community he loves.
Confidence Through Community
For Daniel, who has an intellectual and developmental disability, the YMCA has also become a place where his confidence has grown.
"I think he got more confident because he knows more people and he's known them for so long," said his mother, Socorro.
His father agrees.
"That comes from the positive interactions he has with people at the Y," Glen said. "People who come to the Y are friendly, supportive, loving, family-oriented people. That environment has helped build his confidence."
Outside of work, Daniel has spent years competing in Special Olympics, participating in swimming, basketball, soccer, cycling, volleyball, bocce, disc golf, and more. His parents describe him as incredibly competitive, especially on the basketball court, where he's known for sinking shot after shot.
The YMCA has supported those experiences too. When the local Special Olympics program needed a place to practice basketball, the Y opened its doors so dozens of athletes could continue training together.
For Daniel's family, the YMCA has never simply been a gym.
"It's the perfect place for him," Glen said. "There's nowhere else we'd rather have him work."
Looking Toward the Future
As the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall continues its capital campaign to improve the facility through expanded parking, a renovated natatorium, new gathering spaces, and enhanced member amenities, Daniel's story serves as a reminder of what these improvements are really about.
They're about preserving a place where children learn new skills, where families build lasting friendships, where employees find purpose, and where every member feels known.
For nearly 30 years, the YMCA has been part of Daniel's life. Thanks to the generosity of our community, it will continue creating opportunities for countless others for generations to come.
