Kirk’s Journey with the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program
Our Diabetes Prevention Program is an evidence based, year-long program recognized by the CDC. It’s based on research showing that with modest lifestyle changes, you can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by more than half. Participants work closely with a trained lifestyle coach in a supportive group environment to build healthier habits around eating, physical activity, and stress management.
We wanted to share Kirk, a program participant's hard work and success through the Diabetes Prevention Program.
Kirk's Story
I was at risk of type 2 diabetes. My doctor told me about this class, but I was skeptical and thought I didn’t have time for it because I have a very busy schedule. I decided to give the class a chance. On the first day I was very intrigued, and I learned a lot about healthy eating habits.
Coach Indya challenged us to follow the process and give it a chance. I did and it works!! I started off small because I know that gradual weight loss is the way to make lasting changes. In the process I have changed my diet. I stopped drinking sodas and drank more water. I cut back on the sweets and substituted that for fruits and raw veggies. i.e., apples, bananas, carrots and celery.
I also began working out on a regular basis; after a few months I felt the changes that I made were paying off. I went to the doctor for my check up and she was very pleased with the results of my health. I am no longer prediabetic and I lost 10lbs. She took me off my blood pressure medication and all my lab work was in great standing.
I have realized that this is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change. I have cut out fast food, processed food and I workout 4-5 days a week. I have lost 3 ½ inches, but my goal is to lose 5 more lbs. and maintain my weight. The class works… I am living proof!!
Life will always give you a reason to give up, but you must stay the course. I lost my mom in the process of changing my lifestyle, but I didn’t quit. Oh yeah, I have not missed a single class. Perfect Attendance!!!
Remember YOU, WE can beat this Diabetes battle!!!
