Did you know the very first Father’s Day was celebrated at a YMCA? Father's Day began in Spokane, Washington, in 1910, thanks to Sonora Smart Dodd. Inspired by her own father—a single parent and Civil War veteran—she wanted a day to recognize the strength, love, and dedication of fathers everywhere. With support from local ministers and the Spokane YMCA, she helped launch the first Father’s Day celebration, planting the seeds for the national holiday we celebrate today.

Why the YMCA Celebrates Dads

Today, that spirit of appreciation lives on through the YMCA Father of the Year Award. Each year, our YMCA honors local dads who embody our core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. These men go above and beyond—whether as mentors, coaches, volunteers, or simply positive influences in their families and communities.
